Ingredients 

Main Ingredients

  • 4 large onions thinly sliced
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • ½ cup dry white wine
  • 2 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt to taste
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper to taste
  • 4 slices French bread toasted
  • 1 cup Gruyere cheese grated

Instructions 

  1. 1. In a large pot, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat.
  2. 2. Add sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 25 minutes.
  3. 3. Stir in sugar and cook for another 5 minutes.
  4. 4. Add beef broth and white wine, bring to a boil, then simmer for 30 minutes.
  5. 5. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. 6. Preheat the oven to broil.
  7. 7. Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls, top with toasted bread and grated Gruyere cheese.
  8. 8. Broil until cheese is melted and bubbly, about 3-5 minutes.
