- 4 large onions thinly sliced
- 4 cups beef broth
- ½ cup dry white wine
- 2 tablespoon butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt to taste
- ½ teaspoon black pepper to taste
- 4 slices French bread toasted
- 1 cup Gruyere cheese grated
1. In a large pot, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat.
2. Add sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 25 minutes.
3. Stir in sugar and cook for another 5 minutes.
4. Add beef broth and white wine, bring to a boil, then simmer for 30 minutes.
5. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
6. Preheat the oven to broil.
7. Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls, top with toasted bread and grated Gruyere cheese.
8. Broil until cheese is melted and bubbly, about 3-5 minutes.
