Ingredients 

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup lentils
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 inch ginger, minced
  • 1 green chili, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • to taste Salt
  • 2 tablespoon oil
  • 4 cups water
  • to garnish Fresh cilantro

Instructions 

  1. Rinse lentils and set aside.
  2. Heat oil in a pot. Add cumin and mustard seeds. Let them splutter.
  3. Add chopped onions, garlic, ginger, and green chili. Sauté until onions are golden brown.
  4. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they soften.
  5. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well.
  6. Add lentils and water. Bring to a boil.
  7. Reduce heat and let it simmer for 25-30 minutes or until lentils are tender.
  8. Stir in garam masala and cook for another 2 minutes.
  9. Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot.
